Johanna Owens, Trainer, Coach
Personal Trainer
Coach Jo
is on a personal mission to help heal herself and
to help others. After
struggling with recovery from knee and elbow surgery, and realizing the
imbalances in her own muscle development, Johanna set out to learn the skills
necessary to change her life and the lives of others. She received her personal
trainer certification from the National Academy of Sports Medicine in 2003 and
further strengthened her knowledge by continuing her education with post graduate work at the University of
Texas in Exercise Physiology.
Coach Jo emphasizes the need for total body fitness. She believes there must be a balance between cardio, weights, core training, and nutrition. Her expertise includes sport-specific training, including golf, soccer, lacrosse, triathlons, and general athletic training. She routinely holds sport-specific boot camps and also conducts daily individual training sessions with clients. Sessions can be in your home, at a park, or in the gym. Johanna also has experience in nutrition consulting and can suggest simple, easy-to-follow nourishment ideas. She also works on a one-on-one basis with patients of a local chiropractic clinic for core strengthening and rehab after injuries.
Player
Originally from Washington, D.C., Johanna moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas and play lacrosse. As a player for the UT Women's Lacrosse team, she was voted Best Rookie in 1995, Best Offensive Player in 1997, and was the Most Valuable Player in the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association in 1996. She served as President of UT Women's Lacrosse Club in 1996 and 1997. Jo was selected as a member of the Texas Women's Lacrosse League All-Star Team in 1997, 98, and 99. In 2000, Johanna graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Applied Learning and Development from UT.
Prior to her arrival in Austin, the lacrosse programs in Texas had very little organization and there were no leagues to participate in. As an undergraduate, Jo took on the daunting task of organizing the numerous collegiate women’s lacrosse teams in Texas by founding the Texas Women’s Lacrosse League (TWLL). She also founded and developed the Austin area high school girl’s lacrosse program.
Coach
Coach Jo spent the last 12 years coaching at various schools in the
Austin area, including the University of Texas. Since 2004 she's been the Head
Coach of the Westlake High School Varsity Girls Lacrosse program since.
She has spent time on the field as a player, a coach, and eight years as a high school and collegiate official for women’s lacrosse. Johanna has made several guest coaching appearances with the elite lacrosse program Bounce Entertainment, in New York. She is the founder of both the Austin Women’s Summer Lacrosse League and the Westlake Girls Lacrosse Camp. During the summer, Coach Jo still runs the Austin Women’s Summer Lacrosse League, directs the University of Texas Girls Lacrosse Camp, and coaches the Westlake Girls Lacrosse Camp.
